Q.6 Solve the Word Problems on Addition

a) Tom has 10 mangoes and 11 apples. How many fruits does he have in total?

Solution

To find out how many fruits he has in total, simply add the two quantities together: Total fruits = 10 (mangoes) + 11 (apples) = 21 fruits

Answer: Tom has 21 fruits in total.

b) There are 575 maths books and 225 science books in a library. How many books are there in all?

Solution:

To find out how many books are there in total, add the quantities together: Total books = 575 (maths books) + 225 (science books) = 800 books

Answer There are 800 books in the library.

c) Shilpa has 254 stamps. She has 103 more stamps than Reena. How many stamps does Reena have?

Solution:

To find out how many stamps Reena has, subtract 103 from Shilpa’s total: Reena’s stamps = Shilpa’s stamps – 103 Reena’s stamps = 254 – 103 = 151 stamps

Answer: Reena has 151 stamps.

d) Suresh has distributed 110 invitation cards. He still has 48 invitation cards to be distributed. How many invitation cards does he have in the beginning?

Solution: To find out how many invitation cards he had in the beginning, add the distributed and remaining cards: Initial cards = Distributed cards + Remaining cards Initial cards = 110 + 48 = 158 invitation cards

Answer: Suresh had 158 invitation cards in the beginning.
